It has to be very very good. Sure you can make calculational mistakes, but your mathematical INSIGHT must be very sharp and as flawless as you can train yourself to make it. It is not sufficient to be able to do rote mathematics, you have to have the insight to set up problems and questions mathematically and you have to understand the techniques for solving whatever equations you must work with to perform computations leading to predictions or the proper data analysis.
